Another year in the books. I’m not going all out on this post like I did back in 2024 (er, 2023 technically), but I will take a look at what VeloViewer tells me1 and make a few comparisons to prior years.
For past years check here.

The Interesting Bits
Mileage
Overall, the miles were down. Having a baby will take some time out of your normal life, it seems, as we cannot argue with the numbers here, but generally I’m happy being over 3k+ miles again this year.
| Year | Total Miles (mi) | Cycling Miles (mi) |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,336 | 3,269 |
| 2023 | 3,500 | 3,380 |
| 2022 | 2,453 | 2,358 |
| 2021 | 2,012 | 1,889 |
| 2020 | 2,955 | 2,873 |
| 2019 | 3,062 | 3,036 |
I didn’t find time to do that century ride, but I did find time to spend 3 days on the C&O Trail riding from Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD. Still haven’t finished editing the videos I took for that yet, or posted about it on the blog here. Soon.2
I did manage to ride more outside than inside on the trainer in 2024, though! 2,195 outdoor miles in 2023 became 2,199 outdoor miles in 2024. Must be the extra miles I pick up mountain biking this year, which was a new hobby starting in November 2023.
I still don’t like riding long distances on the indoor trainer. 22 miles max distance last year, and 20 miles this year. Good for keeping up some level of fitness in the winter off-season, but not much more than that.
In 2023 I managed an extra 116 miles on the indoor trainer, which was probably ~10 rides worth. I wonder where I found the time back then to fit in 10 extra rides?
Eddington
My distance Eddington3 was somehow up this year! Credit the weekly night-time bike rides I began doing on a much more regular basis with Team Evesham down in South Jersey. Having that dedicated group to ride with Tue and Thur nights, and most Sunday mornings, really kept me in the spirit of improving my riding skills and fitness.
| Year | Eddington (mi) |
|---|---|
| 2024 | 28 |
| 2023 | 27 |
| 2022 | 24 |
| 2021 | 21 |
| 2020 | 30 |
| 2019 | 34 |
Strava Year in Sport
Strava changed things up a bit, so it’s not a perfect comparison with last year. Below are the bits of it I found interesting.

Revisiting 2023’s Goals
I said back in 2023 these were my 2024 riding goals:
- 200+ days riding (vs 192 this year)
- 20+ days hiking (vs 16 this year)
- A century ride
Well, not sure I did any of that.
However, I did stay above 3,000 miles for the year and somehow magically increased my Eddington number to 28 days where I rode 28 miles or more.
In the spirit of keeping 2025’s goals more manageable, let’s set a few:
- More hiking with Evelyn, my new daughter
- Giving Evelyn some rides to day care in the summer using my bike and a bike trailer for her
- Getting Evelyn a balance bike by end of year, if she’s ready for it
- Keeping myself above 3,000 miles ridding for the year
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the coming year.

Although, I’ve just taken up photography in a somewhat serious way by purchasing a Sony a6600 APS-C camera and a set of lenses. Kristin really likes the photos we get of Ev using it. So another expensive hobby to learn, in addition to cycling and doing stuff with computers. I don’t find much time to blog about this stuff since I’m out doing the stuff. ↩︎
Your “Eddington number” is calculated by looking at how many days you did a ride of at least that many miles. If you rode for a single week at distances of 5, 7, 12, 9, 6, 8, and 11 miles your Eddington number for that would be six (6). You rode at least 6 miles across at least 6 days. In order to increase it to 7 you would need to have ridden 2 more miles the first day and 1 more mile the fifth day. ↩︎
